The 13U Batesville Bats traveled to the Twin Lakes Sports Complex in Bloomington this past weekend and won the Indiana USSSA B-Town Showdown.
The squad defeated the Indiana Bulls Red 13-10 in the title game to take home the hardware. Due to heavy rains Friday, pool play was completely canceled as all 18 teams went directly into Sunday’s bracket play (in 2 brackets). Based on USSSA points, the Bats were sent to the competitive Gold Bracket.
In the opening game the Bats (17-10) defeated Demand Command 10-2 behind a 9-run first inning featuring Clay Eckstein’ double and triple and 4 RBI. Trent Stuart started and pitched three scoreless frames with 3 strikeouts as Preston Blessing threw a stanza.
In the semifinals, it was No. 1 seed Bam 2026 and the Bats got off to another great start with three quick runs. Bam answered with four in its half of the first to claim the lead. Undeterred, the Bats returned fire with five in the second en route to a 19-6 rout. Stuart was impressive with 3 doubles and 4 RBI. Rylan Yeager settled down after the first and fanned 11 for the win. Cayden Drake tossed the final frame.
In the title game, the Bats faced No. 2 seed Indiana Bulls Red from Bloomington, coached by former Cincinnati Red Scott Rolen. Another solid start offensively was key as the Bats plated four runs in the first, led by Stuart’s double to score Noah Weigel. In the crucial third, Batesville scored another six to lead 12-1. A passed ball scored Caleb Mohr and Weigel and Eckstein each singled in runs before another 2-bagger by Stuart plated two more; Mohr’s second hit of the inning sent Stuart home.
The Bulls battled back and trailed 12-9 with an inning left but an insurance run for the Bats led to the 13-10 win. Eckstein started, striking out 5, walking 4 and allowing 4 hits. Stuart dug in and closed the game; the southpaw struck out 5 and walked none.
Stuart finished with 5 doubles and 8 RBI and Weigel scored 10 runs; Eckstein had 2 triples, a double and 9 RBI. Yeager and Drake also hit above .500. Keegan Walke and Paul Beagle had catching duties.
A big weekend is coming up as 48 teams compete at Indianapolis Sports Park for the USSSA state championship.
