WALDRON – With an Ellie Ryan basket off a Kate Weber assist, it appeared the Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters were poised for their first sectional win under coach Eric Feller last Tuesday against Rising Sun.
Up 39-38 with 50 seconds remaining, OA needed some defense to close it out. Instead, Alyssa Simpson of the Lady Shiners earned an and-one opportunity and sank the free throw for a 2-point lead. At the :20.6 mark, Simpson made 1 of 2 foul shots to make it 42-39. Senior Emma Weberding had an open look from 3-point range at the other end but her tying attempt was off. Jenna Peelman, who had the hot hand for RS all night, hit two charities for a 44-39 final.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Twisters gained the lead early in the second frame and held onto it until the 6:38 point of the fourth. Two Simpson FTs knotted the game at 31.
Peelman's three from the corner put the Shiners in front for the first time since it was 11-9. Weber then drew OA even with a traditional 3-point play. A long two by Nora Powell had RS back on top at 36-34.
Out of a Twister timeout at 2:51, sophomore Rachel Lamping set up from beyond the arc and put her team up 37-36. Peelman changed the lead with a pair of freebies as 1:20 showed on the clock.
Peelman started the scoring with a layup in the opening minute before Ryan scored the first of her four first-quarter field goals off a Hannah Haverkos dish. Ryan hit a three for OA's first lead. Midway through the first stanza, Ryan's jumper in the lane made it 7-4.
Rising Sun reclaimed the lead with the next five points, Simpson hitting from mid-range and Peelman banking in a 3-pointer. Ryan tied the game with an 18-footer and Weberding's two foul tosses later answered a scoring move by Peelman.
Weber had a nice sequence as the second quarter unfolded. She laid in a bucket at 6:55 and came up with a steal on the opposite end; she was then fouled on a left-handed make to put OA ahead 15-11. Though the FT was missed, Haverkos' bank-in from the paint had the Shiners calling time.
Ryan later used the glass for two, followed by Peelman's answer from deep. A Peelman cut to the hoop netted two more for RS, but Lamping found senior Alyssa Wanstrath for a 15-foot shot with time running low in the half. It was 23-17 at the break.
Two Weber foul shots gave OA an 8-point lead early in the second half. Simpson put in two at the stripe, but this preceded over three minutes of scoreless ball. Wanstrath ended the dry spell with her second bucket of the contest.
RS sliced the Twister lead to four at 27-23 before a Weber steal and score made it a 6-point game. The Shiners then got within two; Weber found Ryan on the low post to set the score at 31-27 with a quarter to go. Peelman started the fourth's scoring with a rebound basket.
Peelman scored a game-high 21. Ryan led OA with 15, supported by 11 from Weber. Simpson added 14 for the advancing Shiners.
Wanstrath and Weberding played their final games for the Twisters as OA doubled its win total from a year ago.
